An Overview Of Emergency Management Services In California

Emergency management services are vital across the country, and in recent years, have been essential in the Golden State. Over the past few decades, California’s need for emergency services has grown considerably, largely due to an increase in the frequency and destructive power of wildfires.

According to a report by the Legislative Analyst’s Office (pictured), an exponential number of the state’s most destructive fires have occurred in the past 20 years.

In response to the increase in natural disasters across the state, new positions in emergency management and disaster recovery services are opening up. Below, we discuss the most common natural disasters in the state and three prominent employers battling them, all of whom are hiring now.

Emergency Management And Disaster Recovery

Emergency management and disaster recovery services are core to various industries. As a certified emergency manager, you may have experience in healthcare, agriculture, construction, engineering, federal response, or various other public or private sectors. Regardless of the industry, it is necessary to have disaster recovery systems in place in case of a major event.

Top Heavy Civil Construction Projects To Watch Out For In 2022

Heavy civil construction is an integral part of furthering innovation and accessibility in many cities across the United States, California included. The Golden State is a hub of activity across many industries. There is a thriving art and entertainment sector, several sports stadiums, and bustling financial districts.

California is the country’s most populous state, with approximately 39 million citizens. Heavy civil construction projects are critical to accommodate the livelihoods of California’s citizens and prepare for any further population increases. As such, heavy civil construction projects are full steam ahead, not just in 2022, but for the foreseeable future.

3 Major Civil Projects Happening In The Golden State

Below are three major heavy civil construction projects currently underway across California. Many of these projects will advance accessibility by extending transportation services and will improve the quality of life for the state’s residents.

California High-Speed Rail

The California High-Speed Rail is a welcomed project that will boost economic growth, create jobs across the AEC industry, and contribute to a cleaner environment. This civil project will provide a reliable transportation link between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and include 24 stations and 800 miles of railway upon completion.

The High-Speed Rail project consists of 12 sections and has recently completed the South Avenue grade separation in Fresno County. The first phase of this project is expected to welcome passengers by 2025, with full completion expected by 2029. So far, California expects to complete the Bakersfield to Madera project section by 2023.

Los Angeles International Airport Landside Access Modernization Program

The Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) is a $5.5 billion civil construction project currently underway at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This infrastructure project will improve the quality of roadways and traffic flow throughout the airport.

There are four core phases involved in this project:

  • A 2.25-mile Automated People Mover (APM) connecting on-airport stations with transit services
  • A consolidated Rent-A-Car facility
  • Two intermodal transportation facilities for parking and ground transportation services
  • Roadway improvements

The LAMP project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.

Lake Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project

The Lake Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project is a multiphase, heavy civil construction project northeast of Bakersfield, CA, that aims to enhance the structural integrity of the existing dam at Lake Isabella. Construction phases for this project include raising the main and auxiliary dams by 16-feet to prevent over-topping, adding filters and drains on the downslope to improve stability, and creating a 300-foot-wide emergency spillway. This project is slated for completion by the end of 2022, and will  cost over $241 million dollars when done.
